Forum: Color Correction Practices
Concerns around color in the digital production realm affect all of us alike.
Cinematographers Ueli Steiger and Yuri Neyman invited a group of distinguished professionals -DPs, camera specialists, colorists, editors, VFX artists, and post supervisors to join a discussion forum on preserving color decisions in digital workflows on Saturday, March 15th, 2008.

The forum is sponsored by Gamma and Density Co. and will be held in the Gamma and Density Studio. We will publish the summary of discussions on our site soon. If you interested to take a part in future forums, please contact us.

Studio DailyRead in Studio Daily Magazine how cinematographer Ueli Steiger, ASC used Gamma & Density's 3cP to communicate his vision to the color team on 10,000 B.C.10,000 B.C. Scene
The power of the digital intermediate process (DI) opens up a near endless array of color possibilities, but it can also lead to a disconnect between what the cinematographer intends and what happens during the dailies transfer and final color correction.

3CP Power of ConsistencyDemonstration of ASC CDL (American Society of Cinematographers Color Decision List) for ASC membership

Hollywood, CA – November 15th 2007 - On October 29th 2007 da Vinci Systems and Gamma and Density Co. took part in the first demonstration of the ASC CDL (Color Decision List) functionality for the ASC membership at the ASC Clubhouse in Hollywood. The ASC CDL has been developed by members and contributors of the ASC Technology Committee to provide an industry 'standard' for cross-platform exchange of primary RGB color correction data using Offset (lift), Slope (gain), and Power (gamma) functions.

The 3cP System was used for "on-set" color correction with the live color correction settings saved as ASC CDL XML files, which were transferred to a da Vinci Resolve system using a USB memory stick. The images were then available on the da Vinci system with the 3cP "on-set" color corrections intact, ready for final grading, providing full continuity of the DP's original vision.

Images from the two systems were compared so the audience could see there was no difference in color, contrast, saturation, or brightness between the 3cP on-set color correction images and images from the da Vinci Resolve system.

It was also demonstrated that the "on-set" color corrections were entirely reversible or modifiable after transfer to the da Vinci system. This is not the case when using 3D LUTs to transfer color corrections. Once a LUT is created, it can either be applied or not, but It cannot be further modified.

Gamma and Density shall conduct a DP-oriented on-the-set Color Correction seminar during Cinegear 2007 in Los Angeles on June 22 and 23rd.

We are receiving a lot of inquiries about 3cP and its application to Film Production and Post Production, to Digital Cameras and Digital workflow. The seminar would be the best way to answer those questions and discuss the production, the pre-post and post-production issues. We hope you shall be able to attend our seminar.

New Gamma & Density's 3cP version 3.0 (digital) will be introduced during the seminar. It will bring all the power of 3cP's proven on-set color control system the digital acquisition world. Read more

Please read interview with DP of "The Tudors I" and "The Tudors II" Ousama Rawi (BSC,CSC) where he describes in detail how he used 3cP in the set of "The Tudors I".

Gamma and Density Co. will present the latest version of its "on-the-set" Cinematographers Color Correction Program, 3cP. All of the color information (including LUTs) generated by 3cP on set is exportable and needs no further conversion to accommodate post-production color correctors, thus saving time and money while preserving the original artistic vision. The new 3cP can now export its results to the ASC CDL, the Pogle, da Vinci, Assimilate SCRATCH, Final Touch, and Color Finesse color correctors, the LUTher color space converter, and Cine-tal's Cinemage monitors.

"The Tudors," a Showtime mini-series that begins on Sunday, 4/1/07, used 3cP with HD Cameras F900 and F950.

DP Ousama Rawi B.S.C., C.S.C. said: "Every scene was transferred accurately. The final timing sessions took less than half the allotted time to complete. That is remarkable."

The recent features and TV Series which have used and are currently using the 3cP system are: Iron Man (DP Matthew Libatique) , October Road (DP Theo Van de Sande ), The Kite Runner (DP Roberto Schaefer), 10,000 B.C. (DP Ueli Steiger)

The presentation of 3cP took place at the British Society of CinematographersTM clubhouse at Pinewood Studios in the evening of October 2006 . 3cP is a powerful tool that preserves and controls the "look" created by the DP on the set in both the film and HD realms, providing an accurate reference for crucial colour decisions to be made.

Gamma & Density Co. already has 19 feature film productions under its belt, most of them using 3cP from the set to video dailies through to the DI grade. Leading Hollywood cinematographers, including Rodrigo Prieto, Ueli Steiger, Roberto Schaeffer, Theo Van de Sande, Jerzhy Zielinsky , Ousama Rawi and many others, have used 3cP to solve the problems of colour consistency in today's ever-changing world of post-production complexities.

Utilizing Gamma & Density's 3cP on set color correction system (www.gammadensity.com) the Creative Bridge (www.creativebridgeinc.com), creator of the first Mobile Digital Lab & Theater (MDLT) (see American Cinematographer's June '06 issue), has completed "pre-post" on the independent film "Pie & Burger" with DP Jim O'Keefe and Director Clare Sera.

Creative Bridge's Jeff Olm and Brian Gaffney were on set to oversee the 4:4:4 pre-post workflow and delivery of exquisite color corrected dailies The HD SDI images with 3cP LUTs applied were viewed on set in nearly real time, while LUTs were baked to the downconverted copy for editorial without affecting the original digital negative. Gaffney reports the workflow was simple and elegant, and remarks: "The beauty was in the on set color correction utilizing Gamma and Density's 3cP tools."

DP O'Keefe says, "Simply put: Creativity, Cost Savings and Time Savings". Creative Bridge and Gamma and Density are teaming up to use this workflow on several new projects"
